This way of thinking about food can unfortunately lead to a lot of feelings of guilt and shame around eating, which can be really tough to overcome.
That's where intuitive eating comes in. Intuitive eating is all about listening to your body and giving yourself permission to eat what you want, when you want it –– without any guilt or shame. It's a principles-based approach to eating that can really help you tune in to your body's needs and develop a healthier relationship with food.

1. Reject the Diet Mentality
This one seems pretty obvious, but it's worth mentioning because it's such an important part of intuitive eating. When you're dieting, you're usually thinking about food in terms of "good" and "bad," "allowed" and "forbidden." But with intuitive eating, there is no such thing as "off limits." All foods are allowed, and you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want it.
2. Honor Your Hunger
This doesn't mean you should eat all the time, but it does mean that you should listen to your body when it's telling you it's hungry. Ignoring your hunger cues can lead to overeating later on.
3. Make Peace with Food
For some people, this is the hardest principle to follow. If you've been dieting for a long time, you might have a lot of negative associations with certain foods. But with intuitive eating, all foods are "good" foods. There is no such thing as a "bad" food.
4. Challenge the Food Police
The "food police" are the voices in your head that tell you what you can and can't eat. They might say things like, "You shouldn't be eating that," or "You're being bad if you have dessert." Intuitive eating means giving yourself permission to eat whatever you want, without judgment.
5. Feel Your Body's Fullness and Satiety Cues
Tuning in to your body's cues is an important part of intuitive eating. This means learning to eat when you're hungry, and stopping when you're full. It might take a little practice to get used to this, but it's worth it.
